What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that eliminates spider veins by injecting a special sclerosing solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing the vein to collapse and become virtually unnoticeable.

Ideal candidates for sclerotherapy are non-smokers who are physically healthy. Pregnant or nursing mothers should avoid sclerotherapy until after their child is born and finished nursing. Research on the effects of sclerotherapy on breast milk is inconclusive.

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy

This type of sclerotherapy usually takes three to five sessions to achieve maximum results and focuses on smaller veins. Vein specialists use an ultrasound machine to help guide their way to the affected veins, then use a fine gauge needle to inject the solution into the affected veins. This option is most effective for people with poor circulation because it redirects blood flow to healthy veins.

Surface sclerotherapy

This alternative option focuses on veins that are most near the surface of the skin. It is similar to the ultrasound-guided treatment in that it uses very fine needles to promote vein closure, however it does not use any guidance methods.
