Options For Spider Vein Treatment

Many of our patients have small, highly visible veins under the skin that are not typically painful but are aesthetically an issue. These veins typically are most commonly seen on the cheeks, nose, feet, and legs, but they can also occur on the hands and arms as well.

In some patients, surface spider veins are an indication of other possible vascular problems. Some of our patients may experience burning or pain in the areas impacted by the spider veins, or when both spider veins and varicose veins are present.

When these small veins become noticeable, there are several spider vein treatment options our specialists may recommend. The recommendation will be based on a thorough examination by our doctors and through discussion with you as the patient.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy can be utilized both for a spider vein treatment, as well as for a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. It has been used for decades to treat varicose and spider veins, but the process has continually evolved and has been significantly enhanced over time.

For spider veins, a very thin needle is inserted into the affected area, and a salt solution known as a sclerosant is injected into the vein. This solution irritates the lining of the vein and causes it to swell and close, stopping blood flow. The small amount of blood in the vein is trapped and broken down by the body, while the vein itself quickly disappears from the surface of the skin.

This process requires no general or local anesthesia and can be completed in our offices. There is some minor or very mild discomfort reported by some patients, but it is very well tolerated and not a problem. Many of our patients schedule this treatment and return to work immediately afterward.

Considerations

Sclerotherapy is considered a safe spider vein treatment for the vast majority of patients. If you’ve had a blood clot in the past, it is important to discuss this with our doctors. Generally, pregnant women or patients not able to get up and walk around are not considered as good candidates for this treatment. Women can have the treatment after pregnancy, with most doctors recommending a wait of at least 3 months after the birth before the procedure is completed.
