Hemmorhoid Surgery Recovery Aftercare and Recommendations
It is estimated that approximately 50% of Americans experience some form of hemorrhoid disease by the age of 50. Not all of those people ever seek treatment and some find ways to live with or naturally remedy the pain. There are one million new cases of hemorrhoids each year in the United States alone. If you are dealing with these types of issues, you are not alone and seeking treatment for hemorrhoid issues is not anything to be embarrassed about! One of the most common surgery related questions we get is what to expect after hemorrhoid surgery. Every surgical procedure has a recovery period and different things you need to keep in mind depending on what procedure you have done. Hemorrhoid surgery recovery is no different.
In this post, we will go over some of the procedures available to remedy hemorrhoid problems and describe what you can expect after your hemorrhoid surgery. Hemorrhoid surgery recovery times and requirements vary depending on several factors.
You don’t have to live in pain. Hemorrhoid procedures are constantly evolving to become less invasive and require less downtime than ever before.

Hemorrhoid Surgery Recovery
When hemorrhoid issues go beyond nonsurgical healing methods, there are procedures available to take care of the issue quickly so that you no longer have to experience the pain.
How long is it going to take to recover from a hemorrhoid procedure
It depends on the procedure you opt for, but you can generally expect to be recovering for 2-3 weeks. The goal of postoperative care is to minimize side effects and reduce the risk of complications. Doctors vary in their recommendations, so it’s important to follow your treating physician’s suggestions.
Let’s look at the three most popular treatments for hemorrhoid and their aftercare protocols:
Hemorrhoidectomy aftercare
A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgery to directly remove hemorrhoids.
You will be given general anesthesia or localized anesthesia in the area so that you do not experience any pain. The swollen vein at the root of the hemorrhoid is tied off so that there is little or no bleeding. The hemorrhoid is then removed. Depending on the size of the hemorrhoid being removed, the area is either stitched or left open to heal naturally.
Hemorrhoidectomy healing process
Once your hemorrhoids are removed, you will begin to feel better with each passing day. You can expect to feel fully recovered with no pain at all after 1-2 months. You will feel aches and pains around the area for 2-4 weeks after the procedure, lessening each day as you recover.
After 1-2 weeks, you should be able to return to your normal daily activities, but you still should not participate in activities that require a lot of effort. You should avoid heavy lifting and heavy pushing during bowel movements. There are products available to assist that can make your bowel movements easier.
Aside from what you might think, staying active will be good for you during your recovery process. Going for walks is a good activity for you at this time. Don’t move too quickly. You still need to allow your body to heal.
You will likely have to take some time off from work or work from home if possible. 1-2 weeks should be spent at home relaxing as much as possible. It depends on how you feel and the nature of your job. This goes for recovery from all of the procedures in this post.
Stapled hemorrhoidopexy aftercare
There is another procedure that does not remove the hemorrhoid. Instead, a stapling device is used to remove some tissue and close the wound without making any incisions. This procedure is referred to as a stapled hemorrhoidopexy. This procedure can lead to less pain than a procedure that removes the hemorrhoid surgically but is usually a more expensive option.
Doppler-guided hemorrhoidectomy
The Doppler-guided hemorrhoidectomy is the final procedure that can be used to alleviate hemorrhoids. This procedure uses a scope and a probe to locate the arteries that are causing issues.
This procedure generally requires less tissue be removed because of the preliminary scoping and visual data. This can lead to a shorter recovery period, but is a relatively new procedure and needs to be discussed with your physician and surgeon. Not every vein care clinic offers this procedure.
